Chronic Constipation

Dear Jess,

There are numerous reasons for chronic constipation, and certainly dependence on laxatives is really not the best route.

First, you should make sure that there is no organic reason for the constipation (polyps, etc.), possibly through a colonoscopy. This could be done through your primary care doctor or ordered by your Naturopathic Doctor.

Recently, I have had several patients with chronic constipation, one who was helped with relaxation training and a change in diet, and the other who really needed a change in gut bacteria to help him lower his overall irritation. It would be worthwhile to contact your local licensed N.D., but also make sure you rule out any more serious illness.

I hope this helps.
