Crohn's Disease

I have been reading this forum for quite some time now, and I am surprised to see not much discussion about Crohn’s and UC. I was under (wrong) impression that these diseases are rare, but I am now learning that many people suffer from them, especially UC. I have a close friend who has Crohn's Disease, and who is not web-savvy to research this subject himself. I’d like to hear other people’s experiences, and perhaps get some direction is terms of possible treatment strategies. Conventional medicine does not seem to offer much.
