Immunization... or lack there of!!

Dear Mom,

Depending on the state, most states allow either a religious or a philosophical objection. There is also a medical exemption available to children with a previous allergic response to any vaccination.

Because the primary hurtle to higher vaccination levels is parent apathy rather than parent concern, concerned parents may find themselves receiving threatening letters/phone calls from health personnel. While effective in getting those parents who "just haven't gotten around to it" into the clinic, this tends to raise the anxiety levels of concerned parents.

From a public health standpoint, those parents that resist vaccination make up a tiny minority, probably around 1%-2% and on the outside 5% of the population. To block an epidemic in the "herd," we only need 85% vaccination, and at this point the vast majority of outbreaks are "carried" by previously vaccinated children who did not mount an immune response.

On the other hand, much of the concern about vaccinations has been greatly amplified out of proportion. While it is true that the vaccines have side effects, the chances of a child getting a serious side effect are really very small. With concerned parents I discuss each individual vaccination and also discuss delaying certain vaccinations until the child is older.

Vaccination is not a black or white issue, and it is unfortunate that we do not see much discussion taking place.

I hope this is helpful. I have a great deal of vaccination information available at www.maloneymedical.com under what do I treat.
