I had my Mirena put in 10 weeks after the birth of my second daughter. This was on the recommendation of my OB whom I trust very much. He also happens to be one of the founding doctors of Mirena. Sounded like a sure thing, safe while I am nursing, and heck, he helped invent it, can't go wrong, right? Hardly.
I had spotting the day it was inserted, and bled every single day since it was put it. Add in the 15 pound weight gain, the cramping, the mood swings, no sex drive (though what did it matter, I never stopped bleeding long enough fot that to happen anyway!) and the almost daily headaches. When I went for my 2 month checkup, my doctor practially dismissed all my complaints, and actually responded to my weight gain with "There are no calories in Mirena". I was astounded. I gave it one more month (again, on his recommendation, though I totally regret listening to him), and that was it. After three months of constant bleeding and all the other side effects, I had it taken out. And my doctor still refuses to admit that the Mirena caused all these things. It's like I insulted his baby.
Bottom line ladies - it's your body. If you think you are feeling different, off, just not right with the Mirena - you are. Don't let your doctor make this decision for you. They may have read textbooks, but only you know your body. I wish I did sooner. I am bleeding heavily post removal, but it's worth knowing I'm Mirena free! Good luck to you all!
