At this point in a metastatic cancer after the doctors have given up hope the hospital focus will be on pain management. Typically this focuses on narcotics, variations on morphine. These are great pain killers but completely shut down the digestive tract (ask your standard doctors for confirmation of this fact). In larger doses, the morphine variations will shut down your mother's breathing.

Within that context, Essiac tea or any other alternative is completely counter to anything the hospital is doing. Avoiding any controversy about the effectiveness of Essiac for cancer, a number of herbs in the standard Essiac mixture traditionally aid in the liver's processing of toxins, in this case the morphine drugs that she is taking for pain.

To avoid controversy, it would be wise to discuss moving your mother to a hospice situation where she can receive a minimum of drug intervention and you would be free to pursue any alternatives without concern for interactions.

But be sure as you begin this route that your mother is fully committed to the same program. Several parents I have spoken to would prefer to go easily and quickly despite all their children wishing otherwise. It is her life and her choice.

If she is committed to trying alternatives, please consider complete dietary and lifestyle change before committing a significant amount of money to supplements. I have never seen any of the magic herbs work in isolation and have been constantly amazed at the resilience of the body when it is given entirely different fuel.

You may wish to have someone give you a variety of dietary options for your mother. There are many programs but you want one specifically tailored to her preferences and capacity to digest.
