I had my Mirina removed today (quickly and painlessly) after half a year of acne, excessive spotting, weight gain, cramping and so on.. The OBGYN that removed it was different than the prescribing doctor. She was aghast that this doctor told me possible side effects were "negligible." She, herself advises her clients to read the patient listserves, etc before they decide on getting one inserted. She said she likes Mirina, but that for 20 percent of her patients it does not work well due to the side effects. She was familiar with and acknowledged all my symptoms, did not make me feel like a flake for not wanting acne/weight gain, and took it out, without question, after we had a good discussion of alternatives. I only wish I had this level of care with my previous OBGYN - I probably could have avoided all of this in the first place.
