I agree that initially ND graduates will have to struggle because they need to build a patient base. But the curve is more like five years rather than twenty. Unlike an NP, where the initial is great (salary, fewer patients) but doesn't increase with more patients.
But the bigger issue is the framework of practice. You simply cannot send a patient home with a detox program if the hospital system you work for has an algorithm for required care. As more and more medical practice becomes standardized, NPs will lose their autonomy. The standards will continue to vary from state to state, but at this point we're only a few years off from a universal healthcare package of some type which will likely severely curtail NP choices while freezing income and increasing paperwork.
At every point along the way, more and more people will be wanting to hear about the alternatives, and they won't be going to their NP to do that.
