Need research on milk thistle & liver Tx

I work as a homeless advocate. Many of my clients drink, have no insurance. Sometimes they get admitted to hospitals where detox is done. They get put on Lactulose which gives them diarrhea. Once they are back out on the street, diarrhea is more of a problem because of lack of public facilities.

Is there a natural remedy that helps clear ammonia that actually does work, without these severe side effects? I recently read an abstract from a mega-analysis that says milk thistle shows benefit in a couple studies but not in others, therefore, it is not as great as the manufacturers say. Any suggestions? Thanks.
