I'm just out of the hospital after a 2 day stay. I went in to the ER after having severe pains in my abdomen, much like the most intense labor pains I've experienced during childbirth. The ER docs did a full work-up, ruling out bowel problems, appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy/miscarriage, etc.
I had a Mirena put in exactly 12 days prior to the onset of symptoms. My symptoms included several days of bloating, constipation (or rather, a heavy, full feeling to my abdomen), lethargy. This graduated to intense cramping/contractions that had me crying out in pain. Advil and even hydrocodone wouldn't touch the pain.
The ER docs put me on Dilaudid, which helped take away most of the pain. After x-rays, blood work, and a CT scan, they were fairly certain it was PID. Removal of the IUD immediately stopped the contractions; the abdominal pain is subsiding still. They also found ovarian cysts -- a new diagnosis for me, possibly related to the new IUD.
This is my first and last experience with an IUD. I spent 36 hours on IV antibiotics, and I'm now home on two oral antibiotics (doxycycline and keflex). Time will tell what damage was done; hopefully the antibiotics will work, and I'll be able to keep my fertility/organs.
BEWARE the danger of PID, especially in the first weeks/months after insertion. I think the risks are understated. And in my case, the education was lacking -- my health care provider did not give me information about PID and its warning signs.
