NDS in unlicensed states

There are a handful of NDs, in very affluent areas, in my state. When I called for appointments and information, they were very wary of any questions I asked back then. I was new to the whole idea of naturopathy and asked lots of ?s about education, insurance, licensing. I had the feeling all of them thought I was from the Attorney General's office.

They were asking, on average, $100 per visit, and anywhere from $200 to $350 for the first visit. One guy was asking $550. Professional grade supplements were extra.

A few of these NDs no longer practice. A few were investigated by the AG's office and charged with PWL.

Of the two I ended up going to, one had a lot of waivers and disclaimers, making it clear my insurance would not cover services, that diagnoses would not be made, and lab work could not be ordered (which he did anyway - I paid cash, no referral from ND). At no time did he diagnose, but he did treat symptoms and would make statements such as, "we've seen research that supports the use of ABC herb for these symptoms".

The other ND was a recruiter for a Large Group Awareness Training organization, made diagnoses based on its experiential philosophy, without stating up front that he was working for them. He apparently was diagnosing and treating lots of people, had printed materials stating he was a licensed NP, used the wrong title, and was nailed for PWL.
