Dear Lahaina,
If she was my patient, I would look into the long term effects of the coumadin for her situation versus something as simple as an aspirin. Surprisingly, aspirin is as effective in preventing strokes as the much more prescribed coumadin. Not knowing her situation, I can't say, but perhaps an N.D. could help you. At the very least you could get a baseline from the cardiologist: how good do her numbers have to be before we can go off this stuff? At that point you could set up an alternative program.
