Child scratches at night

My coworker's 6-year-old son scratches at night. Allergies have been ruled out. He does not have dry skin, rashes, bumps, hives, eczema, etc. They have not changed laundry soaps or softeners. All the obvious suspects have been ruled out.
He is very analytical, an avid reader, in a gifted child program. The family (parents, 1 girl and this boy) are all over achievers. I'm wondering if it's excess energy.
