not able to smell nor taste

My problem is sometimes I often abruptly loose my ability to 'taste' and I my ability to 'smell'.
I am a 49 yr old woman, only medicine I take is for high blood pressure; I try to eat 'natural/organic' as much as possible.
It's been happening for a while; it is frustrating because I can't figure out what triggers the situation.
Is it hormonal? Is it dental? I don't know which type of doctor to visit for this condition. My GP wants to send me to a brain surgeon...that seems extreeme to me so I want to explore all possible avenues before I go there. Any replies would be helpful.
