Dear GreenDD,
Not knowing your situation, it does sound extreme to go straight to surgery without at least a visit to an EENT specialist (ears, eyes, nose and throat).
The ability to taste is very connected to your ability to smell. Other than the four basic tastes, most of our "tasting" happens with the nose.
When I was doing overnights, five in a row without sleep, I abruptly lost my sense of smell. My zinc levels had dropped to nothing and it took six months for me to build back up to a sense of smell again.
This does not mean zinc is your issue, it simply means that your doctor should rule it and other things out and explain why he feels surgery is the best choice.
I hope this is helpful.
