Kidney Infection

My wife recently had a fever of 104-104 - we determined that it was a kidney infenction and got her on antibiotics. Her urine test results showed protien levels of 110+. Since whe is a recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic, she has controlled her blood sugar levels through diet and exercise. Our question is - Could high protien levels be the result of an untreated kidney infection evloving from an untreated bladder infection, or is diabetes related kidney damage the primary probablility?
