Re: Coumadin therapy vs. Natural alternatives

Dear Mary K,

While there is some effect, my feeling is that the green veggies are getting blamed for poor management of the coumadin levels. The most recent information I have is that even gingko and ginseng do not affect coumadin clotting levels significantly. So rather than taking a salad away from dad, it may be time for a heart to heart about what the goals of the coumadin protocol is and how well it's working. A brief search of medline should provide the information on aspirin and coumadin and give you more information. I would also ask the cardiologist for research supporting the continued use of coumadin despite the side effects. It may be that the coumadin needs to be tapered down, and rarely have I seen a doctor drop the dosage of a drug without a patient request or complaint.

I hope this is helpful.
