ND VS. CPM...or ?

I am interested in providing midwifery care to women but, also want to be able to practice as a "family doctor" so to speak. I would really like to be able to treat whole families and not be limited to prenatal, childbirth, and postnatal care but, be able to also care for mother, child, and even father on an ongoing basis. I'm scared to put myself out to attend an ND program due to the evident instabilty of this profession but, also don't want to become a traditional MD as this just isn't what I as a person am about. Does anyone have any ideas of good professions, or information concerning ND's practicing as midwives in addition to their doctoring practice? Thanks to any one with ideas ;)
