ND & NP

Hi Troy,

I'm sure everybody's experience is different. Here's mine.

1) None of my credits transferred. First,Bastyr uses a modified pass/fail system instead of letter grades. Many programs require letter grades. Second, most admission's committees are unaware of what naturopaths are, or don't regard them very highly. Also, keep in mind that NP school admissions are MUCH more competitive than ND schools.

2)Whether it's worthwhile to do both programs is a very personal matter. Ask yourself: Where and how do you want to work as a naturopath. Keep in mind most states do not license naturopaths. For me it was well worth it! As an NP I can diagnose and treat patients independently in my state (which doesn't license naturopaths) and my NP scope covers almost everything I learned in naturopath school (a couple chiropractic techniques are a gray area). Further, much of my training in naturopathy left much to be desired. At least as far as clinical training, NP school helped me become much more competent practitioner.

3) Remember, the mandate of nursing has always been biopsychosocial (aka "holistic"). Most primary care NPs use one or more CAM modalities. In my school, even those who didn't use CAM were very interested and appreciated my knowledge. So, I didn't feel "frowned upon" at all.

Hope this answers you questions
