Don't wait! I had mine for 4 years and 10 months; had it removed yesterday. There is no reason to wait until exactly 5 years. Do what's convenient for you; it does hurt a little upon removal and a nap afterwards does wonders.

I had mine removed early because of the return of my periods from hell. A period every two weeks is not fun for anyone.
