BF experiencing pain after sex

I have had the Mirena for almost a year and have not had any "problems" or side effects. Recently my boyfriend has been complaining that the head of his penis is sore after sex. He does not feel any discomfort during just after. Is this normal? The strings have softened and are coiled up. Could he be hitting the IUC itself or is it sliding down and out? Please help!!
