Periods - blood colour change

Sorry, this is a strange questions but what does brown menstrual blood mean? I read on another forum it means old blood. I have bled 2 weeks after my 'proper' period (am taking metformin to help regulate me) and this hasn't happened in about 6 months (I used to be very irregular pre- treatment for PCOS and infertility).

Any advice would be appreciated.
