Problems with mirena after 2 yrs

Hi ladies

Its great to find this site and realise that I am not the only one who is now having problems. I had the mirena fitted almost 2 yrs ago and after the initial 8 weeks of bleeding on/off and few other side effects its been fine. I have had a weight gain which is very hard to shift, about 10lb but I am small so this is lot for me.

However I have now started bleeding constantly, sore boobs and bloating. I saw my consultant yesterday who thinks its possible its stopped working? so once he gets blood tests back to discount other things, he is talking about supplementing the mirena with more progesterone ?

I am not keen on this as I will put on more weight.

I had the mirena fitted as I suffered with heavy periods for at least 2 weeks out of every monht. The mirena sorted that and I hadnt had a period for over a year, but now I have been bleeding for nearly 3 weeks.

Its reassuruing to know I am not alone, but has anyone any alternatives to the mirena if I do have it removed? I dont need it for contraception, just to sort out my periods?

I am nearly 43 so thinking of asking for a hysterectomy or do you think thats too drastic?
