Whey protein intolerance

I developed A whey protein intolerance at birth and then again as a young child. The doctor said that I would never grow out of the intolerance. I am now 26, and still have problems with most dairy foods. What exactly happens to the whey as it is taken in the body. Will the body absorb any whey protein or disgard all of it? I am concerned beacuse of weight loss. I am trying to gain weight back and it is extremely difficult without the use of protein supplements. Are there any good whey protein supplements that my body may be able to handle. Would whey protein concentrate, which has less lactose, be a good source for weight gain?
