Dear Sue, To be short, its my understanding that your kidneys are designed to filter out the bad stuff and leave the good stuff. When thay allow protien to pass, the protien can leave sediment or blocking material on the filters, eventually causing kidney failure. To tell you a bit about me, I am a 32 year old male, They found protien in my urine when I was 4 years old. To this day, it has not affected me one bit. I go to a specialist annually and he does have me on Vasotec ( a blood pressure medicine), he also wants me to be on a low sodium diet. But thats the extent of it. I am telling you not to worry, I do know that in 1976 when they tol my parents about it, they really had them scared, but meds have changed since then and so have doctors, kidney disease today is FAR from life threatening. You might inquire about the creatine levels in her blood? This is also a measure of kidney function, normal is typically between .08 and 1.4 but the test can be off by as much as 20%. Creatine is the amount of poisin in your blood, its the bad stuff the kidney\'s filter out. Well, I hope all of this has helped and I wish you, your daughter and family well.
