Dear John,

While high quality protein is necessary in small quantities, the two fuels you will probably use more during the run are first carbohydrates, and then high quality fats. The exhaustion of carbohydrate and conversion to fat burning is usually described as \"hitting the wall.\" In terms of training, I would experiment with different food combinations and keep a journal of what felt best for the next day\'s run (are you a carboloader, or should you be a steak and giant salad person). The key is watching your body and figuring what combination works best for you. I would also be focused on really good quality antioxidants and body repair with a decent multivitamin. Muscle breakdown and repair can be grueling on the body.

I hope this helps. Christopher Maloney, Naturopathic Doctor Augusta and Portland, Maine www.maloneymedical.com Individualized research available for a fee. Informational only, I cannot treat or diagnose via the web.
