Hello there, I am a student at a four-year naturopathic university. I am not against people learning new things about medicine, or anything else for that matter, through distance learning or the internet. You can find plenty of good treatment ideas that you may try out on yourself. However, when it comes to treating other people I feel a standard of training needs to be met. There is no substitute for the clinical training you would receive at any of the four year schools. How can you possibly hone your interviewing, physical exam, and counseling skills if you have no opportunity to practice them and you do not receive objective feedback. There is also no substitute for the classroom and hands-on lab experience. Besides being an incredibly valuable time to clarify your own questions, it is a time to expand your mind by listening to your colleagues questions. The process you go through to become a doctor is one that is shaped through interactions with others. In my mind comparing correspondence courses to a four-year natural medical school is like the comparison of apples and oranges, there simply is no comparison. Faye, Bastyr University
