Decreased platelets can lead to increased bruising. A low platelet count can be caused by a number of things, which will be ruled out by the hematologist. Folic acid and B12 deficiencies, alcohol intake, infections (mono), and a number of different pharmaceutical drugs are all listed, as well as different diseases.
A low platelet and high white blood count would both correspond to an infectious process.
