question for ALL N.D.\\\'s Posted by Meri on 04/19/05 at 09:22 AM [Reply to This Post] [Return to RoundTable]
I have sort of a long question tht I hoping any/all practicing N.D.\\\'s will be able to help me with. Here is the story: My husband recently went to see an N.D. in our area (who was a Clayton Grad) and she tested his meridiens to see how he is was and what supplements he needed. She gave us the rundown and said it wasn\\\'t as bad as she had thought...for his meridiens, she said two were out of whack so to speak. She said he needed help with his liver/gallbladder, thyroid and I think kidneys. So, she gave us about 10 supplements for him to take every day. She said much of how he is feeling is coming from being sick less than a month ago(when he had sort of an upper respiratory infection). She said his body was worn down and within a month after he took these things he would feel great. We thought it was great until we went home and I wanted to really see what was in these products. I noticed something called RNA/DNA factors that I wasn\\\'t sure of, so did some searching on the net and found out that they are extracts from the different glands of cows. I was horrified as I couldn\\\'t figure out how these could possibly help my husband, but nonetheless I thought that I would read on. I asked the N.D. and she told me what they were and that they would help rebuild the cells in my husbands body...that they weren\\\'t anything bad for him to take. Within a few days I read on Dr. Weil\\\'s site that somebody asked the same question about these glandular extracts and he gave them a bad review which is surprising because he doesn\\\'t usually have too many negative things to say. I called the doctor and told her my concern, we are also vegetarians so I was a little concerned but that was really the least of the issues. She was a bit upset when I told her our feelings and she said, \\\'well, if he doesn\\\'t want to follow my protocol then I can\\\'t treat him anymore\\\'...I thought she might have offered a substitute supplement but said that was what she used...she said \\\'whats the problem, doesn\\\'t your husband want to get better?\\\' I said he does, but the ingredients are a big concern for us. She said, \\\'well I can refund his money for the supplements, and I don\\\'t mean to be negative but you just wasted $99 (which was her initial fee) and I said, that\\\'s fine but I don\\\'t feel I wasted money. So she then preceded to tell me more about the product and why my husband should use it...now let me say before I called her my husband called her and she told him the product WAS vegetarian and had no animal by products in it...when I first asked her that on the phone she said same thing to me but then later on in the conversation said something different. She gave me the number then to call the company and have them explain to me the process of extracting the RNA/DNA...so I took it and called...the first thing I asked the girl was were these ingredients from cows and she said yes an then I said so they are obviously not vegetarian and she said absolutely not! So, I went a few days later, to the N.D. and had the still-sealed supplements with me and she asked me to come into her office. I went in and she pulled my husband\\\'s chart and said \\\'oh yeah, he\\\'s in bad shape, look at all these things wrong with him. He isn\\\'t doing well, he\\\'s a very sick man and if he doesn\\\'t do something he will continue to spiral downward.\\\" I just really wanted to get my money back and leave, so I didn\\\'t think of what she was saying at the time. She said and if he doesn\\\'t see me all he can do is go to a regular doctor and they won\\\'t do anything for him and I\\\'m the only N.D. in two counties so I don\\\'t know what else to tell you but I can tell you he isn\\\'t won\\\'t get better unless he takes the supplements and follows my advice. I wish you could just get him to follow my protocol and take these supplements, but I will have no trouble restocking them as people are always buying out my stock.\\\" She said some more things that I didn\\\'t care for and went home and pondered but my biggest question is she rea lly made me worry whether I was doing the right thing. I felt horrible all day long and I thought, could she be right could something really be wrong? Something tha t maybe we didn\\\'t even know about? We thought we were just going in to help his overall state of well-being. My husband sees regular allopathic doctors for different reasons and specialists for his Barrett\\\'s esophagus...and they all are helping him in different ways, but I knew there were other types of doctors out there and just wanted to see what other people would have to say. I didn\\\'t know anything about meridien balancing and chinese medicine, but I thought I would listen to what this N.D. has to say now I don\\\'t know what to think...one day she said he wasn\\\'t doing bad and she could make him feel even better and then within a few days when I said that we didn\\\'t want him taking the supplements she said somet hing different then what she said before? I don\\\'t know what to think, I don\\\'t know what to do....any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated and I apologize for the length of my question. My husband\\\'s health concerns are Barretts, and gall bladder that we were told by a surgeon this needs to be removed. She was aware of all my husband\\\'s health history/family medical history before we had the initial consult, too.
