Re: Uticaria

My daughter too suffers from chronic uticaria. She is ten years old and has had hives since the beginning of July 2000 (apparently they were triggered following a virus). She has been treated with a variety of antihistamines and is currently on a high-dose course of Prednisone, which we are in the process of tapering down to 50mg. one day and nothing the next, and so on. As we are tapering down (we are at 50mg. one day and 15mg. the next currently), she is beginning to have the hives again. She started at 50mg. every day and the hives were suppressed. She is also taking 4 different antihistamines at the same time. I am concerned about the long-term use of Prednisone (especially for a 10 year old) - weight gain, joint pain with tapering, etc. Since we don't know how long we will have to deal with the condition, we hope to get the dosage of Prednisone to the lowest level and at the same time keep the hives under control. I would love any advise regarding the use of Prednisone, weight gain, psychological factors for a 10 year old, etc. Any comments are welcome. Thanks. I have the same feelings of desperation that others dealing with this horrible condition are having.
