To start, I would see depression and manic-depression not as necessarily separate illnesses, nor are they separate from many other illness just as cancer and heart disease. As we obtain more research, it is indication that all of these illness, although being different is symptomology, they have many things in common. The common thread in all of our illnesses is unhealthy lifestyle, stress, nutrient imbalances, allergies and malabsorption. Why is there such an increase in Add and hyperactivity in children they have connected to a lack of absorption of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Many people have been labelled pscyhotic and schizophrenic when they had long lasting food allergies, of people are institutionalized for low stomach acid which dramatically effects b12 (among other things). Symptoms of B12 defincieny means you will likley be depressed, confused and have panic attacks. Quincy Jones's mother was institutionalized for years, she had a vit D deficiency. Other factors may be heavy lead toxicity and environmental factors (even mercury filling have a bad effect on the body-mentally and physcially. If I were you I'd start with the basic, not with specific herbs, as likely has a deeper cause. The first thing I'd do is 1. to a bowel cleans 2. get some acidophilus (good bacteria) and betaine HCL and take before my meals 3. I'd elimate sugar, as it bleaches you body of nutrients and releases too much of the hormone adrenaline, 3. eat regular healthy meals with lots of fresh herbs like ginger, garlic and parsley. 4. begin to see food as chemicals and try to find out how my body is reacting to food. (eg. does a certain food make you feel good and then bad, or just bad- elimate those foods). 5. use a good food state organic vitamin (see www.sportron.com - check out foodstate organice multi-vitamins completron) I take it and feel great. 6. or you make want to take a mineral-vitamin solution (mineralrich) at www.makinghealthychoices.com it is simply amazing, as it is in solution it is easier for the body to absorb. Under stress many minerals and vitamins are depleted (esp. vit b, also C and A and minerals, esp magnesium, but also selenium, copper, zinc, and calcium. 7. learn more about your body and how it work, can you feel stress coming on triggering adrenaline and other imbalances in the body. Be pro-active. Don't let you body get worn down and take time to really learn and care for yourself. Your have a sensitive biochemistry, like many people, but it doesn't have to control you. The last , but important thing I would do would be to take herbs ( I just love my herbs, as well as my vitamins and minerals as supplemention has changed my life-more energy and I feel great), the herbs I would consider, in addition to St. Johns' wort and Kava Kava (as this is a good relaxer and calms nervousness). It is recommended for nervousness, but not really depression. Yet, you would have to try it to see. In quite smalldoses it acts like a stimulant. Here are some herbs that is for anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, fears, neurosis, hypersensitivity, post-partum depression, as well as headache, general congestion, energy stressed, colds hand and feet, asthma, breast lumps, adrenal glands support, abdominal pain and bloating, morning sickness pms and lug congestion-, Perilla leaves, saussurea root, gambir twig, bamboo sap, bupleurum root, pinellia rhizome, aurantium peel, zhishi fruit, ophiopogon root, cyperus rhizome, platycodon root, ligusticum rhizome, dang quai root, panax ginseng root, hoelen plant, coptis rhizome, licorice root. Other herbs to help would be bee pollen, blessed thistle, gingko biloba (I just love my gingko), ginseng, lady's slipper, milk thistle, passion flowerpeppermint, rose hips, sage and st. johns wort. There you go. Best of luck, write and let me know how things are going. All the best.
