I am 40 and was first diagnosed with PTC at age 19, after suffering from severe headaches, nausea, weight loss, and double vision. I was taking tetracycline at the time. I endured numerous LPs (spinal taps), CAT scans, and MRIs. I stayed in remission until age 29, when the disease manifested itself by causing severy optic nerve damage. I am now chronically visually impaired, unable to drive anymore, but still blessed to work and lead an active life. I see a neuro-opthamologist regularly. I have been on medication-Diamox and Lasix, but to no avail. I even had my right optic nerve operated on to stop the damage, which it did, but did not correct the damage already done. My left optic nerve is about 50% damaged as well. I would recommend staying away from the following if you have PTC-any antbiotic tham mimics vitamin A (tetracycline, acutane), orthotricyclene (birth control), multi vitamins with vitamin A. I am on a mission to find a doctor who will conduct a study on people with optic nerve damage. Any suggestions?
