My son was diagnosed with ITP about 4 years ago when he was 4 years old. His platelet count got down to 12,000 and the doctors wouldn’t let him get out of bed in the hospital. Your platelets clot your blood when you get a cut or bump into something. Does he have a spotty rash called piteekea(sp?)on places that he has fallen? If I were you, I would get him to the hospital immediately. My son had 2 platelet transfusions and was in the hospital for a couple of days. The normal range for platelet count is 150,000-400,000. Your son’s count, if it is 1,000 is dangerously low and I don’t know how a steroid like prednisolone would help that. my son has not had any problems in 4 years, but he had to have his blood tested for a year to make sure his platelet level was ok. I hope everything goes ok with your son, and I would take action NOW!
