Dear Joyce,

I am certain if you go looking you will find hundreds of products that claim to help with freckles. Some of them may be effective.

Freckles are the accumulation of melatonin in the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight. Reducing your exposure, or making sure you have a good sunblock, would be the direct way to offset the sun’s effects. In my family, we invest in 30+ screen and sun hats.

If you wish to pursue other methods of freckle removal, a dermatologist would probably know the most effective products and pros and cons of the other methods (the peels, the acids, the makeup, artificial bronzing, etc.) They would also be able to tell you if the freckles are likely to be anything other than just freckles.

Within the alternative field, there is some good data that antioxidants and lifestyle choices help reduce skin aging. Contact your local licensed naturopathic doctor (here or via www.naturopathic.org) if that sounds interesting.

Best of luck,

Chris Maloney, Naturopathic Doctor
