J.D. & co.,
I am a 2nd year ND studnet @ Bastyr. I have found the few SCNM students that I have met to have more hubris than those from Bastyr, possibly because, as I understand it from them, they have the exact same prescriptive authority and scope as MD’s in AZ. I don’t know if this is true or not (all I have is the word of a few student who I met at a national conference), but I have seen that students from schools (Bastyr and Bridgeport) in areas that are involved in licensure debates or are constantly working to maintain their scope of practice capabilities seem to have less of an aura of entitlement. I hope that sentence wasn’t too long. 🙂
I am incredibly pleased to see that some students concerned about our clinical education and our preparedness for practicing after graduation have mobilized to form a Coalition to Improve Clinical Education which has held an informative, moderated meeting with members of the local ND community (faculty, staff, alumni, preceptors and students) to identify areas of concern. A followup meeting is scheduled before the end of the quarter to attempt to find solutions for these issues and present them to the administration. Finally, in January, the administration has been charged with attending a meeting in which they are to be accountable to the community as to how they will address those concerns and implement the solutions. I feel more at home at Bastyr than I ever felt as an undergrad and I hope that these improvements will only serve to expand and increase the quality of care I can give to my patients after I graduate.
