I am 40 years old and never had any allergies or reactions of any kind. Just this January 2nd 2004, the day after new years, when I came out of the shower, I had itches on my lower back. By the end of the day they broke out into full scale hives from head to toe. The most severe were hives around my waist and lower back and the head and ears. Wherever I itched it spread and intensified so that there were scar-like welts everywhere. My husband and kids were in shock — we thought I had some severe allergic reaction to something. I ended up in the emergency room requiring epenepheran, antihistamines and steroids. Boy did that help! Afterwards I saw 3 doctors. So far, allergy tests have revealed no known allergies, although I’m still waiting to hear back from lab tests on some of the other tests. The Docor said that sometimes a viral infection can trigger hives which lay dormant. On new year’s eve I had laryngitis and a cough. That might have been the trigger for hives which i never had before.

For the past 10 days I have been on steroids (prednisone) and antihistamines all day (allegra and zyrtec) with a dose of benadryl at bedtime. This has kept the hives in check and I am no longer bothered by itchiness. However, if I don’t take the antihistamines, they start to appear. My skin is sensitive these days and any scratchmark will produce hives in that shape. I’m hoping this will go away soon, because my new years resolution was to start exercising again and get in shape. The Dr. has recommended no working out until this condition clears because heat/activity can activate it.

Who knew you can get something so weird out of the blue like that. I’d like to hear from someone who’s had a similar experience and who is hive free WITHOUT medication. I just hope this is not a new way of life!!!

Thanks.
