I have suffered from asthma and emphysema for several years and have been on ventolin and serevent which have were becoming less effective. My condition had deteriorated until I was barely able to function. Quite by accident while researching treatment for my wife’s IBS I discovered that slippery elm was useful in liquifying the mucous which was literally choking me.

I started taking 400mg 4 times a day. Within 2 days the mucous came out easily and then gradually disappeared. It is now about 6 weeks since I started the slippery elm and I am completely off ventolin from needing it every one or two hours. I am able to play 18 holes of golf twice a week and do all my household tasks.

I intend stopping the serevent as I don’t think I need it. I have not consulted my doctor as he will ridicule the idea.

I am 70 years old and had smoked for over 50 years until I gave it up about 3 years ago.

I am also sending you some information which could be useful if the slippery elm dosen’t work for your f-i-l.

Emphysema []

Also known as: Pulmonary Emphysema

Description

Emphysema is an ailment of the Lungs characterized by Cross-Linking, over-distention and destruction of the Lungs’ Alveoli (small air sacs). Medically, Emphysema is described as a form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

These Substances Alleviate or Prevent Emphysema

Emphysema is an ailment that is extremely difficult to reverse.

Alkaloids

Theophylline alleviates the discomfort associated with Emphysema (due to its ability to stimulate Respiration).

Amino Acids

Cysteine breaks down the Mucous associated with Emphysema in the Respiratory Tract: research

– The N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) form of Cysteine has been successfully employed in the treatment of Emphysema.

Carotenoids

Crocetin may be of assistance to people afflicted with Emphysema (due to its ability to enhance the deliver of Oxygen to the body?s tissues – the delivery of Oxygen to tissues is impaired in Emphysema patients).

Hormones

Supplemental, exogenous Human Growth Hormone (hGH) is emerging as a promising treatment for Emphysema:

– In one study, three weeks of daily hGH injections raised maximum inspiratory force by 10-12 mm on average and also increased maximum expiratory force in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease patients.

Lipids

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) helps to prevent Emphysema. research

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) helps to prevent Emphysema. research

Smart Drugs

Hydergine counteracts the loss of Oxygen supply to the Brain associated with Emphysema.

Piracetam counteracts the reduction in blood and brain oxygenation associated with Emphysema.

Sulfuric Compounds

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is claimed to reverse Emphysema (according to observations made by some physicians).

Vitamins

Vitamin A alleviates Emphysema.

Vitamin E helps to prevent Emphysema. research

Other Substances

Pangamic Acid alleviates Emphysema.

These Foods or Herbs Alleviate Emphysema

Herbs

Comfrey alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Dong Quai alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Horseradish alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Mullein alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Rosemary alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Thyme alleviates the symptoms of Emphysema.

Oils – Dietary

Fish Oils help to prevent Emphysema (due to the Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) content of Fish Oils). research

These Substances/Factors can Cause Emphysema

Air Pollution

Hydrocarbons can cause Emphysema.

Free Radicals

Free Radicals can cause the Cross-Linking of Lung tissue that is implicated in Emphysema.

Minerals – Toxic Heavy Metals

Cadmium can cause Emphysema.

Recreational Drugs

Marijuana Smoking can cause Emphysema or Emphysema-like changes in the Lungs. research

Tobacco Smoking causes Emphysema (via Hydrocarbons).

Toxic Effects of Emphysema

Respiratory System

Emphysema causes the Alveoli of the Lungs to become dilated and causes the walls of the Alveoli to undergo dissolution, causing the formation of larger and larger air spaces within the Lungs. This results in a reduction of the total functioning surface of the Alveoli for Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen exchange.

Emphysema causes shortness of breath to the extent that the Emphysema sufferer cannot exhale without using great effort.

These Ailments can Cause Emphysema

Respiratory System

Recurrent bouts of Bronchitis can cause Emphysema.
