Six months ago I was having pain on my upper right side, my lower back and I was out of breath. I thought I might be having a heart attack. I went to see my doctor who sent me for a ct scan of the abdomen and pelvis. They found a pretty large cyst on my liver. My doctor told me these types of cysts are very common and that they have no symptoms and there is no treatment needed. He said that a large number of people go through life with these cysts and never know it unless for some reason they have a ct scan done. He said that the only complication with these cysts would be that they would grow and rupture therefore they would bleed and that would be a problem. That’s why he suggested I had a CT scan done every six months to make sure the cyst did not grow. I was not satisfied with that explanation and found a second opinion with a very well known gastroenterologist in some fancy hospital in N.Y. After examining me and looking at the report of the CT Scan he told me the same exact thing my regular doctor had told me. He suggested I have a sonogram done every six months just to make sure the cyst did not grow. Well, this all happened in October. Around the fir week of April I started feeling pain again on my right upper side, my lower back, my upper back and even my chest. I was bloated and could hardly eat. I had already forgotten about the cyst liver. When I went back to my doctor she sent me for another ct scan and sure enough the cyst had grown considerably and was pushing on all my other organs. They decided to treat it by draining it. They inserted a catherer into the cyst itself and drained it. They repeated this procedure for five days. I was in the hospital for five days because my liver functions were not normal, I was jaundinced and my billirubin was 14points when the normal shoud be 1.5. I am home recovering now and feeling a little better but not 100%. They will not guarantee that it will not happen again and if it does I think I will ask that it be removed. So so much for the theory that these cysts are harmless and cause no problems.
