In 1948 when I was 3,I developed Bright’s disease. My parents were told I did not have long to live.Over the next 4 years, I was admitted to Children’s Hospital in Washington,DC., 28 times. The average stay was 2 weeks and the longest 3 months. Several times during that period my parents were told to come to the hospital, as I would not survive the night. My doctor saved me with massive blood transfusions. During those 4 years I was given over 1000 transfusions.I was the only child to survive in that period and owe it all to that doctor. The hospital and doctor charged no fees. At the age of 7, the attacks stopped and I have been healthy ever since. Iv’e been giving back as a blood donor and a volunteer at Children’s.
