Dear Jane,
Mononucleosis, an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, is typically self-limiting. My Merck tells me that in 1-2% of cases, fatigue lasts for months. The EENT specialist should run a series of tests to rule out other illnesses, and the key question is why your immune system isn’t strong enough to kick the virus. If you want to talk about immune boosting alternatives, a call to your local licensed Naturopathic Doctor wouldn’t hurt (via this site, or www.naturopathic.org)
Best of luck,
