Re: low matabulism – Naturopathic Medicine Network

Dear Ian,
A low metabolism is often associated with a low thyroid or adrenal fatigue. A couple of lab tests (the thyroid is standard, the adrenal fatigue needs a naturopathic doctor or a really up-to-date regular doc). These possibilities should be ruled out by a visit to your doctor.
If you want to temporarily raise metabolism, a number of different ways present themselves:
Exercise-may raise the metabolism for as much as 24 hours.
Supplements- everyone’s favorite is caffeine, but a number of other things can do the same thing.
Stress- most of us walk around with elevated metabolisms.
Eating right, getting enough sleep, taking care of yourself – my favorite, because of the number of people I see walking around with sleep deprivation.
I hope this is helpful.
