Dear Jan,

The short answer is that there are two camps, four year, Naturopathic medical school graduates, and distance learning graduates. I’m in the first camp, hence my obvious bias. If you are not a licensable, four year grad, then you will be practicing medicine without a license.

I have numerous friends taking correspondence courses for their own knowledge. I urge them to look as locally as possible for classes, as local hands-on courses are good ways to meet other students and book knowledge is only a part of a holistic program.

In looking at Westbrook University’s Naturopathic distance program, I am not pleased. There are some things one can learn from a distance, but massage does not fall in that category. Neither does natural childbirth. If you plan on studying at Westbrook, plan on making your practice “complimentary”” rather than complementary medicine.
