Dear Lisa Butler,

5-HTP is technically not an herb. It is 5-Hydroxytryptophan, a modified amino acid. Amino acids, including typtophan, are available in many proteins.

5-HTP acts as a building block for serotonin in the brain. Since it should bring up serotonin levels, there is a risk of too much serotonin in someone taking 5-HTP and an antidepressant that keeps serotonin around longer. Too much serotonin can cause all sorts of side effects, including heart arrhythmias.

So please check with a doctor before starting this or any supplement.

I hope this is helpful.
